Delhi Civic Body Launches Monsoon Drive to Enhance Green Cover in Lutyens’ Delhi

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on Tuesday unveiled its comprehensive plantation programme for 2025-26, aiming to plant over 2,000 trees along with five lakh shrubs and exotic plants. The initiative will begin in the second week of July, coinciding with the onset of the monsoon.

Following a detailed survey of Lutyens’ Delhi, NDMC has identified key locations for plantation, including Akbar Road, Shankar Road, Sardar Patel Marg, and major green spaces like Nehru Park, Lodhi Garden, Sanjay Jheel, and Talkatora Garden. NDMC Vice-Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal said the drive aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a sustainable and environmentally friendly city. “In total, 2,039 trees and around 4.82 lakh shrubs & saplings will be planted across NDMC’s jurisdiction,” he added.

Expanding Green Spaces

The initiative builds and plans on last year’s success, where NDMC planted 11,096 trees and 13,68,148 shrubs under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign. The 2025 drive focuses on areas identified as needing increased greenery or gap plantation, covering prominent roads, gardens, and colony parks.

This year, ten tree species—including imli, jamun, pipal, bargad, champa, bamboo, neem, and ashoka have been selected, along with ten ornamental and native shrubs such as chandni, NDMC currently manages 1,450 acres of green spaces, including six major parks, 122 colony parks, six nurseries, 981 CPWD-maintained parks, 52 school greens, 51 roundabouts, 14 market gardens, and about 15,000 avenue trees. Although NDMC covers only 3% of Delhi’s land area, it contributes 64.5% of the city’s green cover.

Conclusion

Chahal noted that special attention will be given to beautifying green strips along roads like Madhu Limaye Marg, Satya Marg, San Martin Marg, Simon Bolivar Marg, Mandir Marg, Niti Marg, and C-Hexagon, filling gaps and brown patches to enhance both visual appeal and ecological quality during the monsoon.
