Delhi’s First Artificial Rain Project Forced to Wait as Monsoon Holds Sway
Delhi’s much-anticipated artificial rain project has been postponed once again, as persistent monsoon showers make cloud-seeding operations currently unviable. Initially scheduled for July, the trial will now tentatively take place on August 30, depending on meteorological conditions, according to Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai.
The artificial rain initiative is being undertaken by the Delhi government in partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur. It aims to use cloud seeding—a weather modification technique involving the dispersal of substances like silver iodide or sodium chloride into clouds—to induce rainfall. The goal is to combat severe air pollution in the capital by reducing airborne particulate matter and cleaning the atmosphere.
“Cloud seeding requires specific cloud formations, which have not been present consistently due to current monsoon patterns. Our technical teams from IIT Kanpur and the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) are closely monitoring conditions,” said Rai.
This will be Delhi’s first-ever experiment with artificial rain, a concept previously tested in Maharashtra and Karnataka during drought-like situations. However, in Delhi, the objective is not drought relief but environmental cleanup—especially ahead of the winter season when pollution levels typically spike.
The project’s pilot phase was originally conceptualized in late 2023 after air quality in Delhi plunged to the ‘severe’ category. The government allocated ₹13 crore for the experiment. If successful, it could pave the way for regular artificial rain interventions during pollution emergencies.
Despite the delay, officials remain hopeful. “We are not cancelling—just rescheduling,” clarified Rai. As August progresses, officials will reassess cloud density and moisture levels to determine the feasibility of conducting the trial. Delhiites now wait to see whether science can succeed where nature falters in cleansing the city’s choking skies.
